Three Junes by Julia Glass

Three Junes

Three Junes by Julia Glass follows the connections of a family from a father to his sons across the globe in Greece, Scotland and New York and over a period of ten years. It is split into three sections taking place during the summers of 1989, 1995 and 1999.

This book started with Paul, the father character as he traveled to Greece to collect himself after the death of his wife.  The second section is from the perspective of his son Fenno and starts with Paul’s death and funeral.  This was my favorite section and goes into the relationships between Fenno and his twin brothers as well as the experience Fenno had been through of caring for a close friend as he suffered from complications related to AIDS.  Fenno has the same feelings of loneliness and misunderstanding that a lot of us can understand, even in the midst of a close family.   The third part brings some of the characters from the first two parts together and ends with a sense that relationships between Fenno and his brothers have healed and grown and that life is better because of it.

While I enjoyed this book and the relationships that were developed in it, I was not satisfied with the ending.  For me the book peaked during the second part and may have been best ended there.   However I can see the draw for a feel good ending where things are tied together and am still happy that I read this book.
