In The Lake of Dead Languages two different stories are brought together through the main character, and narrator, Jane Hudson. Jane had attended the private Hart Lake School with one of her best friends, Lucy, both on scholarships thanks to their aptitude in Latin. Jane was very good friends with Lucy and had a crush on her twin brother, Matt. Deirdre, Lucy and Jane’s other roommate, made up the crowd and part of this book tells the about their time in school and the tragedy that struck them prior to graduation.
Years later, Jane, going through a divorce with a young child of her own returns to Hart Lake to teach Latin. As she is there similar events start taking place as several of her students die in the lake, in an eerily similar fashion to what took place her senior year.
Jane struggles to make sense of the events that are happening in the present while reliving and discovering new details as to what happened when she was in school and lost her friends. This was an intriguing story, a mystery where the answer was not obvious throughout the whole story. The characters were fully developed and I couldn’t wait to find out who was behind the events taking place. This is a good, quick read and I’m going to look for more books by Carol Goodman.
