A Change In Altitude by Anita Shreve

I typically enjoy books by Anita Shreve although I often feel that there are a lot of similarities between them…such as the setting and characters.  A Change In Altitude was a little bit different.  It took place in Kenya in the 1970s.  Peter and Margaret go as a newly married couple to live and work in Kenya.  Peter is a doctor who is doing research while in Kenya and Margaret tries to find a niche for herself while there.  She has always been interested in photography and this becomes her passion and eventually her work while there.

Peter and Margaret befriend another expatriat couple, Arthur and Diana.  They go with another couple on a hike up Mt. Kenya, which is a spontaneous trip for them as neither are big hikers.  A tragedy occurs while they are on this hike the circumstances surrounding it change the dynamics between Peter and Margaret as well as impacting how Margaret even views herself.

Margaret tries to function inside her deteriorating marriage and part of that involves getting a job with a newspaper as a photographer.  Peter becomes more involved with work and Margaret does too, as well as forming a friendship with a journalist who begins to mean more to her than he should.

The end of this book was a little bit of a disappointment as I did not have a clear picture as to the conclusion.  I just wanted a little bit more resolution.  Overall I was interested throughout in both the characters and the story.  There was a little bit of Kenyan history involved in the story and I probably would have enjoyed a little bit more, but overall this was a good book.
