Sounds like an interesting read, but I can see why it might not have been what you wanted. I also try not to put a lot of stock in covers unless it's a romantic bodice-ripping cover - those are ones that I unfortunately just can't take seriously and I end up shying away from them.

Wonderful review!

Shreve is one of my all-time favorite authors and this was one of my very favorites. Probably second only to The Weight of Water. It was sentimental as well as a mystery. I don't go for mystery novels but I loved this one.

I agree. I read Snow Falling about as many years ago and still have many vivid visual memories. And I'm not typically a visualizer. It was a tender love story and a close-up view of the horrors of war. Reminds me of Atonement for that reason.

Berg is one of my favorite authors. I love the realism she puts into her novels. There were many aspects of this book I loved. As you say, we got an up close and personal view of a widow trying to put the pieces of her life, her self back together. I liked the dialog with her daughter. Realistic and yes, we feel a bit embarrassed for her. And worried.
I found myself half way into the book, when the surprise is revealed, feeling a little incredulous. It sounded like a fairy tale come true. Not the realism I look forward to from Berg. It just seemed too over the top sentimental. I happen to be married to a home builder who has built custom homes. I try to imagine a wife being happy that her husband built a house for her entirely from a conversation they had about dreams and that he got it so right. I'm too much of a pragmatist, I guess.

I truly loved this. It is going on the list of one of my favorites. One of the things that I can't get over is that this was in the 1960s. That is in some of our parents lifetimes, in our grandparents lifetimes. It is not as long ago as I want to think it was. Thanks for the recommendation!!!

So glad you liked it. I really enjoyed it too and have thought about it many times in the few short weeks since I finished it. I know it's not true, but these women were so brave and I only hope I could be half as brave in the same kind of situation. Did Anne enjoy it too? Nice to see some postings lately, maybe the book funk is gone.
